Many successful people point to family as the wellspring of their careers. But not many can do so as directly as Jenny Miller can with regard to her grandmother, Lillian, who showed her granddaughter that love and a strong sense of family have potential to positively influence the lives of people beyond that family.
The founder and president of Senior Care Concepts can point directly to that relationship as the inspiration for the company, which provides assessments, ongoing care management, and acts as a liaison between health care professionals, seniors and their families, and as a result, allows family members to have the quality time they need with their loved ones.
In retrospect, Miller’s path seems to have led only to where she is now. She graduated in 1997 from Wheelock College with a bachelor’s degree in social work and a concentration in human development. A year later, she had a master’s degree from Boston University in social work and gerontology. From school she took a job as program manager with the Massachusetts Department of Elderly Affairs’ “Grandparents raising Grandchildren” program. After a short time in the Bay State, she returned to Rhode Island, spending seven years at the Village Retirement Communities, based in Greenville. Her work as community outreach director, assistant administrator and regional marketing director allowed Miller to see the entire range of issues relating to gerontology health care, especially the emotional toll on familial caregivers.
So in 2006, Miller launched Senior Care Concepts to fill the gap in services and support for relatives who provide care for elderly family members. At its core is the desire to alleviate the stress of providing care, and its success is a testament to the need for it. And to Miller’s grandmother, who inspired it all.
